I’ve always loved chocolate (like a lot of people), (when I was little, I could eat entire chocolate bars… oups). But since i’ve changed my diet, I try to avoid eating as much; as I thought that chocolate gave me pimples. But then I discovered (to my delight), that it’s actually the sugar in the chocolate that gives me acne… !!! (and not cocoa itself…).
As a chocolate fan, I had to share my thoughts on these vegan chocolate brands. In addition, I find that these chocolates are very similar and interesting to compare. One is from the Artisans du monde brand and the other is Dardenne. Those are chocolates that i buy in France (cause i’m french if you didn’t know hihi but you can maybe find them somewhere, otherwise, you still can keep reading cause we never know, maybe one day, you’ll come in France and would like to eat chocolate !). I hope that i’m not gonna make you crave chocolate too much… hihi.
This article is not in partnership with any brand.
Vegan Chocolate Artisans du monde : (“for a fair trade”)
What I’m looking for in a chocolate is obviously, that it’s a vegan chocolate brand but also that it does not contain refined sugar (only coconut sugar, or agave because they have low ig which is better for my acne and that’s why i stay away from cane sugar too. Sure it’s better than refined sugar but still not perfect for my acne).
They have a whole range of vegan chocolates (4 different kind), but I take this one because it contains coconut sugar and not cane sugar. (Coconut sugar with a low glycemic index of 15 is better for my acne as i said). The squares of this chocolate bar are small (just wanted to let you know that I don’t know why haha).
The brand history :
This * brand of vegan chocolate was created in 1974, Artisans du Monde is a “fair trade movement which currently has more than 140 associative shops spread throughout France and 6000 volunteers. Together, we promote sales, education and citizen engagement activities.”
* All their chocolates are not vegan, but they have a vegan range so, I allow myself to write ‘vegan chocolate brand’.
Where you can find it + his price :
I buy mine at Natureo (an organic store here in France). You can also find it in differents retailers and on their site. The 100g bar costs €3.30 (on the website).
The “most” :
– Without soy lecithin = guaranteed without GMOs
– Traditional Swiss manufacturing method
– 100% pure cocoa butter
– Certified origins : Peru, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Bolivia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Madagascar.
What I like :
This is the first vegan chocolate brand that I’ve tasted with coconut sugar… and I directly fall in love. I love the ingredients. There is no refined sugar or cane sugar (although it can be unrefined, I still prefer to avoid it because of my acne). It melts very well in the mouth, it’s creamy and it tastes like “normal” milk chocolate without its misdeeds (with a slightly stronger taste of cocoa : 48% cocoa).
We can’t really taste the coconut milk (I also could have put it in “what I don’t like” because when you see that a chocolate contains coconut milk, you expect to tastes the coconut milk right ? But I think that maybe the brand have chosen to make it tastes more neutral). In addition, more than 50% of Artisans du Monde products are from organic farming. Cause the bar is small, I can take it everywhere haha (it may rather be a disadvantage, because I would then suddenly like to eat it everywhere !). And what I like the most is that despite the fact that it contains only good ingredients, it tastes like naughty food (you know what I mean?…). Finally, you have understood, I like it a lot !
What I don’t like :
There’s not enough ! The brand only makes 100g bars. (which is maybe better, so I can’t devour more !). It is quite sweet, as you can see, coconut sugar is the first ingredient on the list. (but it’s good sugar for our health !). I find that for its weight, it is quite expensive (but trust me, it’s worth it). And finally, I wish I could find this brand also in supermarket!
Dardenne: (“master chocolatier in the Pyrenees since 1897”)
The brand story :
The * brand of vegan chocolate Dardenne was created in 1897 by Ludovic Dardenne, pharmacist chocolate-maker. In the late 1800s they sold spices including cocoa. Bewitched by this delicious beverage, they became passionate about what will be called chocolate and became true creators of excellence. “In our luchon workshop (Pyrenees), we make all our chocolates from the ground bean using a traditional process and in accordance with the highest standards of the profession.”
In 2014, the Dardenne chocolate factory was awarded by the Sisqua innovation prize for its 100% vegetable chocolate with almond milk and coconut sugar. They have several 100% vegetable bars and some are also made with agave (low glycemic index). In addition, they also make candies, spreads and vegan chocolate drink mixes (for breakfast).
* Not all their chocolates are vegan, but they have a vegan range so, I allow myself to write ‘vegan chocolate brand’.
The “most” :
– 100% organic
– Gluten free
– Fair, in charge.
Where to find it + his price :
You can find this brand of vegan chocolate on their website, on Greenweez and organic store (I found it at Bio c bon, once again, a french market haha). The 100g bars costs 4.20 €. The squares of this tablet are small.
What I like :
I heard about it for the first time 2 or 3 years ago thanks to Georgia (from this blog). So it always stayed in my mind but I only tried it recently. Like the “Artisans du monde” one, I also find it very good ! It’s not too sweet (I think) and it is crunchy. It has a softer cocoa taste than the other, despite the fact that it contains more (58%). If you are not a fan of almonds, do not worry, even tho this chocolate is almond-based, we don’t taste them (I think). So, like that, the chocolate keeps a neutral taste.
What I don’t like :
Again, the bar is quite small and the price is high compared to the weight. It is not available in the supermarket. I think his taste would be better for pastry cooking than to snack on like that (if you know what I mean). Then, I don’t find it as creamy as the first one.
Their differences :
The vegan chocolate brand “Artisan du monde” is made in Switzerland. Dardenne vegan chocolate is made in France.
They are both vegans and therefore do not use milk.
> Dardenne chocolate milk has been replaced by an almond-based formula.
> The Artisans du monde chocolate replaces cow milk with coconut milk.
It also contains 41% coconut sugar, while Dardenne chocolate contains only 29%.
On the other hand, the “Artisans du monde” chocolate is less caloric (I don’t really pay attention to the calorie, but it’s good to know !). It contains 563 kcal / 100g but the Dardenneone contains 624 kcal / 100g (the difference is not huge).
The “Artisans du monde” one is cheaper.
To conclude, these chocolates are very similar. Their tastes are both very nice, and I like them a lot, but my favorite is the “Artisans du monde” one. But it’s subjective because they’re both so good, and between the two, there are no obvious comparisons. The only downside of both is that we can’t find them in normal supermarkets haha.
Although the packaging of the Dardenne vegan chocolate is very pretty and elegant, I prefer the packaging of the Artisans du monde one because I find it more original and I think it also feels younger.
I really recommend you to taste them if you can !!
In addition, these chocolates will be perfect if you are vegan or want to avoid bad things ! Because they are healthy chocolates (or at least much healthier than the “normal” in my opinion).
